Caring for your
High MoonS
It’s a living thing
We hope you think of your speakers as living things. The wood still breathes due to the natural hardwax oil finish.
Gently dusting with a clean microfiber cloth should be sufficient everyday care. A gentle wipe down can be performed on the audio components as well, but care needs to be taken in order to avoid damage to the domes, as they will depress if pressure is applied. Do not use any type of liquid on the paper cones of the woofers. They are intentionally unfinished and can become damaged if moisture is applied.
Over the life of your speakers, we encourage you to embrace the patina and any gentle scratches or surface imperfections that you may acquire over time. This patina can become part of the character of these heirloom pieces and can add a sort of wabi-sabi nature and personality.
If a more thorough cleansing of the wood is desired, we recommend cleaning with a microfiber or lint free cloth, slightly dampened with water to remove any fingerprints or smudges. After which, you can apply Rubio Monocoat’s Maintenance Oil in Pure, which can be applied to help bring back some vitality and renew the protective quality of the oiled finish as well as offer some minor scratch repair. A scrap of old t-shirt or disposable blue shop towels work great for application and wiping. Be very careful not to apply the oil on the speaker components. Use just enough oil to wipe on as if you were merely dusting with a slightly dampened cloth. You do not want the oil to be dripping from the cloth when applying. Please follow Rubio’s instructions and make sure to wipe the wood DRY to the touch when removing excess oil. YOU CANNOT REMOVE TOO MUCH OIL. But you can remove too little of the oil, leaving a tacky surface once dried. This renewal step may not ever be necessary! But you can feel free to do this every 3-5 years if desired and depending on the conditions your speakers are exposed to.
We also recommend keeping your speakers in a consistently conditioned space and out of direct sunlight. Direct sun can fade the paper cones and wood over time. Heat and humidity fluctuations can have adverse affects on wood just like any piece of wooden furniture.
As always, feel free to reach out to us with any questions you may have on the care of your High Moon speakers.
