HIGH MOON + ANCIENT PROCESS
The charring on your new speakers is an ancient Japanese preservation technique called YAKISUGI, or shou sugi ban. This process makes the wood extremely durable and has stood the test of time on exterior facades of buildings and houses in Japan for generations. We think the finish lends a deep connection to material and results in an incredible texture and color not achieved by any other method of finish. Traditionally, no additional treatments were applied other than the charring process. We apply a layer of penetrating oil to unify the color and texture and to harden and seal the surface. The finish is durable and can sustain handling and cleaning but care should be taken, as with any piece of wooden furniture, to avoid scratching the surface. That being said, like all High Moon speakers, we encourage you to embrace any patina such as minor scratches and surface abrasions as part of the life and character of your speakers.
Our preferred method of dusting and cleaning is to use a small section of tack cloth and very lightly graze the surface with little to no pressure. The slight tacky nature of the cloth will attract the dust and lint like a magnet. You may also gently dust with a feather duster to attract the dust and lint from the recesses of the textured surface. Wiping the surface with a microfiber or other cloth is not recommended as they can sometimes catch on the texture and leave bits of lint behind.
As always, please reach out with any questions you may have about the care of your new speakers. We are here to help!
